New Delhi: BJP's main ally JDU has demanded a review of the central government's Agniveer scheme for recruitment in the defense forces. Nitish Kumar's party has made this demand at a time when the BJP has got 32 seats less than the majority in the Lok Sabha election results declared on Wednesday, due to which it cannot form the government alone. JDU spokesperson KC Tyagi said that some voters are angry with the Agniveer scheme. Our party wants that the questions raised by the public should be discussed in detail and the shortcomings of the scheme should be removed.

'JDU is not against UCC'

According to news agency ANI, Tyagi also said that his party is not against the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). As the national president of the party, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had written a letter to the head of the Law Commission regarding UCC. We are not against it, but a solution should be found by talking to all the concerned parties. However, JDU reiterated its support for caste-based census and also demanded special status for Bihar.

Caste census was conducted again

Tyagi said, 'No party in the country has said no to caste-based census. Bihar has shown the way. The Prime Minister also did not oppose it in the all-party delegation. Caste-based census is the need of the hour. We will take it forward.' He also said that there is no pre-condition for this. There is unconditional support. But giving special state status to Bihar is in our heart.

Opposition is opposing the Agniveer scheme

The India Block condemned the Agniveer scheme in its election manifesto and promised to abolish it if it won the election. Earlier this month, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi wrote to President Draupadi Murmu urging her to intervene in the Agneepath scheme to remove discrimination in the benefits given to the families of deceased soldiers. The opposition has also demanded a caste-based census and it was implemented in Bihar too when Nitish Kumar was the chief minister under the grand alliance government.

What is Agniveer Yojana?

Under the Agneepath scheme, youth between the ages of 17-and-a-half and 21 years are recruited for a period of four years, with 25 per cent given the option to be recruited for an additional 15 years. The government has consistently backed the scheme, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah strongly endorsing it, saying it is 'attractive for the youth as it guarantees them a full-time job after four years of service in the armed forces.'

Modi was elected the leader of the NDA alliance

On Wednesday, Narendra Modi and senior Bharatiya Janata Party leaders held a meeting with NDA alliance leaders. This was their first meeting after the alliance won a majority in the Lok Sabha. Reaffirming their faith in Modi, the NDA leaders elected him as the alliance leader, paving the way for his third consecutive term as prime minister. With 12 MPs, the JDU is the BJP's second-largest ally after the Telugu Desam Party's 16 MPs. On Wednesday, the NDA allies passed a three-paragraph resolution in Hindi, saying they have chosen Modi as 'our leader'. During the NDA meeting, Nitish Kumar asked Modi to work fast on government formation. On the other hand, TDP chief Naidu said winning elections three times in a row is not an easy thing.
