It is already very difficult to detect the state of stress. Its symptoms have been ignored for a long time. But now scientists have found a unique way to detect the initial state of stress. They have found that specially trained dogs can detect a person's stress just by smelling his breath. Scientists will now try to train the dogs living with the elderly specifically for this, so that they can identify the stress of their companions and help them in time.

People struggling with the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) will now be able to benefit from the services of these canine abilities. The study, led by Lara Kiroja of Dalhousie University, published in Frontiers in Allergy, also took advantage of the expertise of Dr. Sherry Stewarty's Clinical Psychology Lab and Gadbois's Canine Olfaction Lab.

It investigated whether dogs could learn to smell volatile organic substances that are linked to PTSD? Kiroja says that dogs have already been trained to help people during times of stress, but until now the dogs were learning to respond to behavior and physical signals.

This study shows that some dogs can detect stress by smelling breath. It involved 26 human participants, of which 54 percent had PTSD stress levels. In this, the participants gave their breath samples while wearing a face mask, one of which was in a calm state and the other while remembering their experience of extreme stress while wearing the mask.

In the study, out of 25 trained dogs, the two with the best results were selected. These two dogs showed 90 percent efficiency in differentiating between stressed and non-stressed breath samples. While the dog named Evi gave 74 percent result, the dog named Callie gave 81 percent result. Its most important thing is that this work is seen only in the initial level of stress, which is considered very useful.
