I have been trying for 20 years
Speaking at Chabahar port, Jaishankar said that we were trying to reach an agreement with Iran for almost 20 years. We could have made a short-term deal because there were a lot of problems from their side. But thanks to those two people in recent months, the President of Iran and the Foreign Minister of Iran, who unfortunately died in a helicopter crash yesterday. Due to his interest and initiative, we were able to finalize a long-term agreement. This is very important because it is one of the big things related to the Global Connectivity Corridor.
9 people died in helicopter accident
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hussein Amir-Abdollahian died in a helicopter crash on Sunday. The Iranian government confirmed the death of these people on Monday. Nine people, including the two, died in the accident that took place in a remote mountainous area in northwest Iran. Highlighting the significance of this development, Jaishankar stressed that the Chabahar port agreement goes beyond its immediate role as a port. It marks a broader shift towards increased connectivity, with India at the center of this transformative corridor.
Chabahar agreement part of change
The Foreign Minister said that India's stand will remain at the center of the entire issue related to Chabahar port. We will benefit from this. Therefore the Chabahar Port Agreement is bigger than a port. This is part of the connectivity transformation we are seeing. That's why we're so eager to move forward. He said India and Iran signed a 10-year agreement to jointly develop and manage the Chabahar port to develop strategic and economic cooperation.
