Chandrashekhar, who once sold milk to earn his living, is today the owner of Bandhan Bank whose market capitalization is Rs 28997 crore. He says that with his hard work and skill any person can achieve any position in the world. He never considered any work small. After studies, he also worked in an NGO at low salary.

Father had a small sweet shop
Born in Agartala, Tripura in 1960, Chandrashekhar Ghosh's father had a small sweet shop. His family is originally from Bangladesh and at the time of independence, they came to Tripura as refugees. The family of nine members could barely survive with the income from this shop. Ghosh experienced financial hardships since childhood. He also used to help his father at the shop. He also sold milk by going door to door. He did not leave his studies even while working. Chandrashekhar studied till 12th in a government school in Greater Tripura. After that he went to Bangladesh to pursue graduation.

Expenses for education covered by tuition
Ghosh graduated in Statistics from Dhaka University in 1978. His family could not afford the expenses of university studies and living there. To meet his expenses he used to give tuition to children. He lived in the ashram of Brojonand Saraswati in Dhaka.

NGO job changed path
The year 1985 proved to be the turning point of his life. After finishing his Masters, he got a job in an International Development Non-Profit Organization (BRAC) in Dhaka. There he saw that the women of the village were improving their living standards by starting work even with small financial assistance. Ghosh was greatly impressed by this and the idea came to his mind that by doing such work in India, he could not only help women but also create a good business.

Left job and started microfinance company
Chandrashekhar Ghosh returned to Kolkata in 1997 after working in Bangladesh for almost one and a half decade. In 1998 he started working for the Village Welfare Society. This organization worked to make people aware of their rights. Ghosh formed a microfinance company named Bandhan in 2001 to provide loans to women. Chandrashekhar Ghosh started his company by borrowing Rs 2 lakh from his brother-in-law and some people. He also started a voluntary organization named Bandhan. In 2002, he got a loan of Rs 20 lakh from SIDBI. That year, Bandhan distributed loans worth Rs 15 lakh to about 1,100 women. At that time there were only 12 employees in his company.

NBFC formed in 2009
In 2009, Ghosh got Bandhan registered by the Reserve Bank as NBFC i.e. Non Banking Finance Company. She changed the lives of about 80 lakh women. In the year 2013, RBI had invited applications from the private sector to set up banks. Ghosh also applied to get a banking license. In 2015, Ghosh got the banking license and thus Bandhan Bank came into existence.

Market cap is Rs 28997 crore
The market capitalization of Bandhan Bank today is Rs 28997 crore. According to the website of Bandhan Bank, the number of customers of Bandhan Bank is 3.26 crore. The bank has 6262 banking outlets in 35 states and union territories.
