Rs 2000 notes will not be able to be exchanged on April 1, RBI issued order, reason given

New Delhi. Due to the work related to annual accounting in banks, the facility to exchange or deposit Rs 2000 bank note will not be available on April 1, 2024 i.e. Monday. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said in a statement on Thursday that this facility will be restored in 19 regional offices of the central bank the next day on Tuesday. RBI said, “Due to the activities related to the annual accounting closure, the facility of exchange/deposit of Rs 2000 bank notes in 19 regional offices of the Reserve Bank of India will not be available on Monday, April 1, 2024.”

RBI had announced the withdrawal of Rs 2000 note on May 19, 2023. The bank said that by the end of business hours on February 29, about 97.62 percent of the Rs 2,000 notes have returned to the banking system and only Rs 8,470 crore notes are still with the public.

How many notes can be changed at once?
According to the RBI FAQ, a person can exchange or deposit notes up to a limit of Rs 20,000 at a time in 19 offices of the Reserve Bank along with post office facilities. RBI had announced its decision to withdraw Rs 2,000 notes in May last year. This note was issued for the first time at the time of demonetization in November 2016.

Where can notes be exchanged?
Apart from this, people can send ₹2000 notes to any issue office of RBI through Indian Post from any post office in the country. This amount will be deposited in their bank accounts. RBI said. These 19 offices of RBI are in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram. Initially, the deadline for exchanging or depositing withdrawal notes in bank accounts was September 30, 2023. However, it was later extended to October 7 of the same year.
