For the first time an Indian film received the honour, Payal Kapadia also created history
This was the first time in the last 30 years that an Indian film won the Grand Prix Award. This was the first Indian film to compete and be selected in this category. After winning the award, Payal Kapadia thanked Cannes and also said that now no Indian film should wait for the next 30 years. Before All We Imagine as Light, the Indian film 'Swaham' got a nomination in this category in 1994. But then it could not win any award.
Payal Kapadia said this about the film
After receiving the award at the Cannes Film Festival, Payal Kapadia said, 'This film is about the friendship of three women and many times women stand against each other. This is how society is made and it is very unfortunate. But for me friendship is a very important relationship because it can create more solidarity, inclusiveness and empathy towards each other.'
