Senior Congress leader and former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh or his wife have also been contesting elections from here. Virbhadra Singh remained the MP here till 2013, but when Virbhadra Singh became the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, he had to resign from the post of MP, after which Lok Sabha by-elections were held here in the year 2013. Here Virbhadra Singh fielded his wife Pratibha Singh, while Jairam Thakur fielded from BJP's side. The contest was interesting, but Pratibha Singh defeated Jairam Thakur in the elections and she became MP from here. However, later after the BJP government came to power, the same Jairam Thakur became the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh.
BJP won in 2014 and 2019
When Lok Sabha elections were held in the year 2014, here BJP got victory in Modi wave and BJP candidate Ramswaroop Sharma won the election. In this election, Congress's Pratibha Singh had to face defeat by about 40,000 votes. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BJP again fielded Ramswaroop Sharma and he was successful in winning again, but in the year 2021, BJP MP Ramswaroop Sharma passed away. After this, by-elections were held here, in which Congress once again fielded Pratibha Singh, wife of former CM Virbhadra Singh, while Brigadier Kushal Thakur contested from BJP's side, but BJP lost this election and Congress candidate Pratibha Singh was elected from here.
