How does the app change voice?

Modern technology has made voice changing very easy. There are many online tools and apps available for this. These apps or tools work by manipulating the input audio signal, usually a voice recording. Advanced algorithms are used to modify the voice quality. This allows for voice changes ranging from minor adjustments to dramatic changes. For example, changing a male voice to a female voice or adding unique sound effects. Using a voice changer app, you can not only change the pitch and tone of your voice but also make it sound like another gender.

The growing trend of AI voice scams

Nowadays, fraudsters are cheating people through AI voice change. Such cases have come to light in many states including the capital Delhi. Fraudsters are creating such audio using AI, which makes it seem that the victim knows someone, due to which they get tricked into giving their personal information or sending money. Last year in Delhi itself, a 59-year-old woman became a victim of AI generated voice fraud. The fraudsters cheated her of Rs 1.4 lakh by changing her voice. In the most common fraud, a person cheats by posing as a family member, friend or customer service representative.

How to avoid this type of fraud?

  • Never give out personal information over the phone unless you are sure of the caller's identity.
  • Be wary of urgent requests for money or personal information
  • If you find any such activity suspicious, report it to the police immediately.
