New Delhi. Former explosive opener of the Indian cricket team, Gautam Gambhir can become the new head coach of Team India. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has contacted Gambhir in this matter. The Indian board wants to know from Gambhir whether he would like to become the head coach of the Indian team. The tenure of the current coach of Team India, Rahul Dravid, is till the upcoming T20 World Cup. BCCI has recently invited applications for the post of coach. Interested former players can apply till 27th May.

According to ESPNcricinfo, BCCI has contacted Gautam Gambhir and asked if he is interested in this job. Gambhir is currently the mentor of IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders. Further discussions are expected between BCCI and Gambhir after the end of IPL 2024. The IPL final will be played on May 26, while the last date to apply for the coach post is a day after the IPL final.

Rahul Dravid does not want to extend his tenure
According to the report, Rahul Dravid does not want to extend his tenure. He has informed BCCI about his decision. 42 year old Gautam Gambhir has no experience of coaching at international or domestic level. He has worked as the coaching in-charge in two IPL franchises. Former left-handed opening batsman Gautam Gambhir was the mentor of Lucknow Super Giants in 2022 and 2023 while he became the mentor of KKR in 2024. Under his guidance, KKR has qualified for the IPL 2024 playoffs. KKR has reached the playoffs by being at number one.

Shahrukh Khan convinced Gambhir to become his guru
Gautam Gambhir, who has led KKR to the title twice under his captaincy, joining the KKR team as a mentor was unexpected but it is said that team owner Shahrukh Khan convinced him for this.
