Congress Working Committee resolution praises Rahul Gandhi, urges him to become Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha

New Delhi : The Congress Working Committee (CWC) on Saturday passed a resolution requesting Rahul Gandhi to take over the responsibility of the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. According to the information, Gandhi has sought time to consider this request. The post of Leader of Opposition is given to the largest opposition party but it should have at least 10 percent of the total members of the House. At present, at least 55 MPs are required for the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and this time Congress has got 99 seats. It was also decided in the CWC meeting that in the states where the results have not come as expected, the Congress high command will form a committee and review why this happened.

Senior Congress leader KC Venugopal on Saturday said that the Congress Working Committee has passed a resolution requesting Rahul Gandhi to take up the role of the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha. “The CWC unanimously requested Rahul Gandhi to take up the post of Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha… Rahulji is the most suitable person to lead this campaign inside Parliament,” he said at a press conference. Asked if Rahul Gandhi is ready to accept the role, the Congress leader said he will take a decision on it very soon. Congress Rajya Sabha MP Pramod Tiwari also said, “Of course he (Rahul Gandhi) wants to become (Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha). It was our Working Committee's request. He is fearless and courageous.”

Encouraged by the results of the Lok Sabha elections, Venugopal said that our leaders and workers are full of enthusiasm. The revival of Congress has begun. He also said that the atmosphere in the CWC is completely different from the atmosphere four months ago.

Rahul Gandhi has been praised a lot in the resolution of the Congress Working Committee. The credit for the increase in Congress seats has been given to his tours and his efforts. The resolution says, 'Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi should be remembered mainly for Bharat Jodo Yatra and Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, which he himself designed and led. Both these tours, reflecting his thinking and personality, were historic turning points in the politics of our country and it aroused hope and confidence in millions of our workers and crores of voters.'

It said, 'Rahul Gandhi's election campaign was single-minded, incisive and precise and more than any other individual, he was the person who made the protection of the Constitution of our Republic a central issue in the 2024 elections. The 5 Justices – 25 Guarantees programme resonated very powerfully in the election campaign. This was the result of Rahul ji's travels, in which he listened to the fears, concerns and aspirations of all the people, especially the youth, women, farmers, workers, Dalits, Adivasis, OBCs and minorities.'

Many leaders including Sonia Gandhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Manish Tewari, Telangana CM Revanth Reddy, Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar attended the Congress Working Committee.
