Scientists have created a machine learning model that has been taught to estimate the total number of years of a person's life by only looking at a special tissue at the back of the eye, which is called the retina.

Increasing age affects everyone, but if two people are the same age, it does not mean that they are aging at the same pace. This algorithm is so accurate that it estimated the age of about 47,000 middle-aged and elderly people in the UK within 3.5 years. A decade after these retina scans, 1,871 people died, and those whose retinas appeared to be older were more likely to fall into this group.

The results of the study published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology are based entirely on observation, which means scientists do not yet know what the biological reasons behind all this are. Nevertheless, the results strongly support that the retina is more susceptible to damage caused by aging.

Due to the presence of both blood and sensory tissue in the eye, the retina can tell a lot about both nerves and brain health. Previous studies have shown that the human eye can detect cardiovascular diseases, kidney diseases and other signs of ageing. But this is the first study by which the difference in the age of the retina can tell about the entire age of that person and it proves that the retina plays a big role in the aging process.
