New Delhi. Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council (EAC-PM) member Sanjeev Sanyal has said that lakhs of students prepare for the Civil Services Examination for five to eight years, which is actually a 'waste of youth energy'. Sanyal said that if someone wants to become an administrator then he should try for UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) or other such examinations. “It is absolutely fine to attempt UPSC or other such exams, but only if the person wants to become an administrator,” he said.

Sanyal has written on the social media platform 'X', “The problem is that lakhs of youth are taking five to eight years to pass this examination. He made this a way of life. This is really a waste of youth energy.'' He has written that this may be surprising, but most of the bureaucrats agree with his opinion. His thinking is also the same. These are the people who had passed the exam at some point of time.

How many attempts are there, right?
“One or two attempts are fine for those who really want to become administrators,” Sanyal said. But it is not right to spend a large part of your 20 to 30 years of age for this. This is harmful.'' The economist said an entire industry, 'in fact an entire city like Kota', is linked to preparation for an exam. Whereas less than one percent of these applicants will be successful.

What would have happened if the energy was used somewhere else?
“And this is happening every year,” he said. Imagine what would be the results if this huge effort is deployed in other areas.'' UPSC conducts three examinations every year to select officers of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and Indian Police Service (IPS).
