Gavaskar, popularly known as 'Sunny', became the first batsman to be out three times in Test cricket. He was first out by England's Geoff Arnold on the first ball of the 1974 Birmingham Test. Sunny's catch was taken by wicketkeeper Alan Knott. After this, West Indies' Malcolm Marshall caught this Indian batsman on the first ball of the match in the 1983 Kolkata Test and Pakistan's Imran Khan caught this Indian batsman on the first ball of the match in the 1987 Jaipur Test. Gavaskar's catch in the Kolkata Test was taken by wicketkeeper Jeff Dujon and in the Jaipur Test by Javed Miandad.

Hannan fell victim to Collins all three times
Talking about Bangladesh's Hannan Sarkar, he became the second batsman to be out three times on the first ball of a Test in June 2004. It took almost 13 years (1974 to 1987) for Gavaskar to be out three times on the first ball of a Test, while Sarkar was out three times on the first ball of a Test in a period of three years. Gavaskar was out on the first ball of the match three times in a long career of 125 Tests, while Sarkar lost his wicket on the first ball of the match three times in a short career of 17 Tests. Hannan was out on the first ball of a Test against the West Indies all three times and the bowler who dismissed him all three times was Pedro Collins. Left-arm fast bowler Collins first bowled Hannan on the first ball of the Dhaka Test in December 2002. After this, he repeated this feat in the Grass Islet and Kingston Tests of 2004. In both these Tests, Hannan was out LBW on the first ball of the match.

All these bowlers have taken wickets on the first ball of the match twice. Apart from Sunil Gavaskar, Arnold dismissed New Zealand's John Morrison, Hadlee dismissed Australia's Keith Stallpole and India's WV Raman, Kapil Dev dismissed Pakistan's Mohsin Khan and South Africa's Jimmy Cook, Lakmal dismissed West Indies' Chris Gayle and India's KL Rahul and Starc dismissed Sri Lanka's Dimuth Karunaratne and England's Rory Burns on the first ball of the match.

Apart from Tests, Gavaskar and Hannan Sarkar have also lost their wickets on the first ball of ODIs. On 9 December 1980, in the Benson Hedges World Series Cup ODI match in Perth, New Zealand's Richard Hadlee got Gavaskar caught by wicketkeeper Warren Lees on the very first ball. However, despite Gavaskar being out on the first ball of the match, India won the match by 5 runs. Similarly, in the World Cup 2003, Hannan was out on the first ball of the ODI match against Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka's left-arm fast bowler Chaminda Vaas bowled Hannan on the first ball of the Pietermaritzburg ODI on 14 February 2003. Vaas took four wickets including a hat-trick in the very first over of the match and Sri Lanka won this ODI by 10 wickets.
