Situated at an altitude of 7200 feet above sea level, Gagar is as beautiful as it is, it also has religious importance. An ancient Shiva temple is situated in Gagar. Local resident Madan Bisht tells PressNews24 that an ancient Shiva temple is situated on the top of the mountain at a distance of one kilometer from the roadside. It is believed that sage Garg had performed penance at this place. In ancient times, there was a very dense forest at this place and people used to travel on foot. In such a situation, a temple was established at the foot of the hill for people to visit. Those who could not go to the top of the mountain and have darshan in the main temple, used to worship in this temple situated at the foothills of the hill. In this temple there is an ancient temple of Shiva. He said that in olden times, whenever people traveled to Bhabar or Terai areas, they used to put a stick in this Dhuni and pray to Lord Shiva that their journey should be auspicious and safe.

Hills of Almora-Ranikhet and Pithoragarh are visible from Gagar.
