What is the history of Bhushi Dam and why was it built?

Bhushi Dam is not a recent place but it was built by the British in 1860. At that time, a railway line was being laid from Mumbai to Pune, this was a part of that project. Actually, at that time steam engines were used to run trains, they needed water. That is why this dam was built. Let us tell you, this dam is named after Sir Jamshedji Jeejebhoy. Jeejebhoy was a very famous Parsi businessman and social worker, who helped a lot in the construction of this dam.

This dam is made of stones and its length is 201 meters and height is 15 meters. This dam collects water from the Indrayani river and its tributaries. This dam is just 6 kilometers from Lonavala railway station and just 2 kilometers from Khandala station. Being on the old Mumbai-Pune highway (NH4), it is easily accessible by road.

By car: If you have a car, then the fun of visiting here is something else! You can go via the old Mumbai-Pune Highway (NH4). Let us tell you, Bhushi Dam is about 90 km from Mumbai and it takes about 2 hours to reach here. On the other hand, Bhushi Dam is about 70 km from Pune and can be reached in one and a half hours.

by bus: You can take a bus from Mumbai or Pune to Lonavala and then take an auto or taxi from there to reach Bhushi Dam. The bus fare can range from Rs 100 to Rs 300 depending on the type of bus. At the same time, the fare of an auto or taxi can range from Rs 50 to Rs 100.

by train: Take a train from Mumbai or Pune to Lonavala and from there take an auto or taxi to reach Bhushi Dam. The train fare can range from Rs 30 to Rs 100, depending on your ticket class.
