South Korea, India discuss disarmament, non-proliferation in Seoul

The External Affairs Ministry said consultations between India and South Korea on disarmament and nuclear non-proliferation were held in Seoul on Friday.

Both sides discussed developments in the field of disarmament and non-proliferation in the nuclear, chemical and biological domains.

Besides, regional non-proliferation issues, matters related to outer space security, conventional weapons including AI in the military sector and multilateral export control arrangements were also discussed, the MEA release said.

The Indian side was led by Muanpui Saewi, Joint Secretary (Disarmament and International Security Affairs) in the Ministry of External Affairs, while the Korean delegation was led by Yoon Jong Kwon, Director General for Non-Proliferation and Nuclear Affairs in the Ministry of External Affairs.

According to Yonhap news agency, India and South Korea discussed regional and global challenges of disarmament and non-proliferation, including North Korea's nuclear and missile programs and implementation of UN Security Council sanctions.

According to South Korea's Foreign Ministry, the two sides also exchanged views on challenges and opportunities posed by emerging security issues such as artificial intelligence and space security.

The 3rd India-Republic of Korea Consultations on Disarmament and Non-Proliferation was held on March 31, 2022.
