New Delhi. No juice will be sold on e-commerce websites in the name of health and energy drinks. The government has issued strict guidelines for this. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on Tuesday directed all e-commerce food business operators (FBOs) to ensure proper assortment of food products sold on their websites. The food regulator says that not segmenting properly creates confusion among consumers.

FSSAI in its investigation found that food products licensed under 'Proprietary Food' were being sold as dairy-based beverage mix or grain-based beverage mix or malt-based beverage mix on the e-commerce website under the nearest category 'Health Drinks', It is being sold in the category of 'Energy Drink' etc. This means that grain or malt drink products are being sold as health or energy drinks, when they should be a separate category.

what order did you give
The food regulator said, 'FSSAI has clarified that the term 'health drink' has not been defined or standardized anywhere under the FSS Act 2006 or the rules/regulations made thereunder. Therefore, FSSAI has advised all e-commerce FBOs to immediately remove this misclassification.

What are proprietary foods?
Let us tell you that proprietary foods are those foods which are not standardized in food safety and standards (food product standards and food additives) regulation. The objective of this corrective action is to increase clarity and transparency regarding the nature and functional properties of the products. This also aims to ensure that consumers can make well-informed choices without facing misleading information.

Why was the order needed?
The food regulator has needed such an order because on many e-commerce websites such drinks are being sold as health and energy drinks, which actually do not fall in this category. FSSAI has issued this order only to control this and to give consumers the option to choose the right product.
