Manoj Bajpayee and Shah Rukh Khan started their acting career together. Both learned acting skills from the same theater group in Delhi. At that time, both Manoj and Shah Rukh were struggling to make their mark as actors. In a recent interview, Manoj recalled the time when he used to share cigarettes with Shah Rukh Khan during his theater days. Recalling that time, Manoj said that not only Shah Rukh but all the actors used to share their cigarettes. He told in an interview to Galta India, 'When you are in a theater group and someone is smoking, he never does it alone. No one smokes cigarettes alone because no one can afford it. So if someone had one cigarette, he had to share it with four people.'

He said, 'Even if he has money to buy a packet of cigarettes or just one cigarette, he cannot smoke it alone because in the past others have shared it with him and now it is his turn to share it.' Manoj said that he was associated with Barry John's theatre group for a few years and Shah Rukh was also associated with it for a while before coming to Mumbai and starting his career in Bollywood. Manoj said that he came to the city of dreams only after working in Shekhar Kapur's 'Bandit Queen'.
