English language will be placed in the category of 'foreign language' from the upcoming academic year in Maharashtra. Thus, English will not be compulsory for students of class 11th and 12th. However, students will have the option of choosing two languages. One of which will be an Indian language and the other will be chosen from Indian and foreign languages. This claim has been made in a report by Education Times.
According to the new subject scheme for class 11th and 12th, students can choose eight subjects. Which include two languages, environment and physical education. While students will be able to choose four other subjects of their choice. This is being done so that Arts, Science and Commerce stream can be abolished.

Students will have to choose one of two languages from a group of 17 Indian languages. Which includes Marathi, Sanskrit, Hindi, Gujarati, Urdu, Kannada, Tamil, Malayalam, Sindhi, Bengali, Punjabi, Pali, Telugu, Ardhamagadhi, Maharashtri Prakrit, Avesta.
Pahlavi and English are included in the category of foreign languages along with German, French, Russian, Japanese, Spanish, Chinese, Persian and Arabic. While the other language can be from the first or second group. In such a case, English will not be a compulsory language.
