Mullanpur (Chandigarh). In IPL 2024, Ashutosh Sharma's innings of 61 runs in 28 balls was overshadowed by the brilliant bowling of experienced Jasprit Bumrah (3/21). Thanks to the killer bowling of Boom-Boom Bumrah, Mumbai Indians defeated Punjab Kings by nine runs in a very exciting match on Thursday. After scoring 192 runs for seven wickets with Suryakumar Yadav's aggressive innings of 78 runs in 53 balls, Punjab was bowled out for 183 runs in 19.1 overs. With this victory, Mumbai reached seventh position with three wins in seven matches, while Punjab slipped to ninth position after fifth defeat in seven matches.

Punjab Kings had a very bad start. He lost his four wickets in the first 2.1 overs till 14 runs were scored. Gerald Coetzee gave the first blow to Punjab on the third ball of the very first over of the match. In the next over, Bumrah dismissed Rilee Rossow and Sam Curran. Coetzee came in with the next over and dismissed Liam Livingston on the very first ball. In this way Punjab suffered 4 setbacks in the span of 11 balls. Ashutosh Sharma and Shashank Singh (41 runs in 25 balls) overcame these setbacks and took their team to the threshold of victory. Ashutosh hit 7 brilliant sixes and two fours in his innings. He made a partnership of 57 runs in 32 balls with Harpreet Brar (21) for the eighth wicket.

Shashank also set the stage for Punjab by making three important partnerships. He added 35 runs in 28 balls with Harpreet Singh (13) for the fifth wicket, 28 runs in 15 balls with Jitesh Sharma (9) for the sixth wicket and 34 runs in 17 balls with Ashutosh. Apart from Man of the Match Bumrah, Gerald Coetzee also took three wickets. Akash Madhwal, captain Hardik Pandya and Shreyas Gopal got one success each.

For Mumbai, Suryakumar hit seven fours and three sixes in his innings and made a partnership of 81 runs in 57 balls for the second wicket with Rohit Sharma, who was playing his 250th IPL match, and 49 runs in 28 balls with Tilak Verma. Rohit scored 36 runs in his 25-ball innings with two fours and three sixes, while Tilak hit two fours and the same number of sixes in his unbeaten 34-run innings in 18 balls. For Punjab, Harshal Patel took three wickets for 31 runs while Sam Karen, who was leading the team in the absence of regular captain Shikhar Dhawan, took two wickets for 41 runs.

While defending the target, Mumbai bowlers pushed Punjab on the back foot by taking four wickets in the first three overs. In the first over, Ishan Kishan took a brilliant catch of Prabhasimran (0) on the ball of Coetzee. In the next over, after Bumrah bowled Riley Russo (one), Sam Curran (one) was caught by Kishan behind the wicket. Coetzee gave the fourth blow to Punjab by catching Livingstone (one run) on his ball in the third over.

Impact player Harpreet (13) and Shashank, who was in great form, decorated the innings and hit fours against Coetzee, Madhwal and Bumrah. Punjab's score in the power play was 40 runs for four wickets. Shashank sent Shreyas Gopal's ball to the spectators in the seventh over but this bowler walked Harpreet due to which half of the Punjab team was in the pavilion for 49 runs.

Shashank hit two consecutive sixes against Gopal in the ninth over but in the next over, Madhwal ended Jitesh's innings. Now the responsibility of the team was on Ashutosh, he kept the team's hopes alive by hitting sixes against Madhwal, Shepherd, Hardik. Harpreet Brar reduced the pressure from Ashutosh by hitting two consecutive fours against Coetzee in the 15th over.

He completed his half-century in 23 balls by hitting the sixth six of his innings against Madhwal in the next over and then hit a six on the free hit as well. Brar also hit a six on the last ball of this over due to which Punjab scored 24 runs in the over. Now the team needed 28 runs in the last 24 balls. Bumrah bowled an economical over, after which Coetzee gave Mumbai a big success by dismissing Ashutosh in the 18th over, while Hardik dismissed Brar. Kagiso Rabada, who came to the crease, hit a six but was run out in the last over.

Earlier, when invited to bat, Rohit Sharma hit fours against Livingstone and Arshdeep Singh but in the third over, Rabada (one wicket for 42 runs) dismissed Kishan. Suryakumar hit two consecutive fours in this over. Rohit hit sixes against Arshdeep and Curran due to which the team's score in the powerplay became 54 runs for one wicket.

After hitting a brilliant six over long leg against Rabada, Suryakumar sent Livingstone's ball to the visitors in the 10th over. He completed his third consecutive half-century against this team in 34 balls by taking one run against Harshal in the next over. In the same over, Rohit got lucky on the slow ball and despite the ball not hitting the bat properly, he went for six runs.

Captain Curan ended Rohit's innings by getting him caught by Brar in the 12th over. Due to which Mumbai lost its second wicket for 99 runs. After Rohit's dismissal, Punjab bowlers tightened their grip a bit but in the 15th over, Tilak Verma hit two consecutive fours while Suryakumar increased the run rate by hitting one four. Both of them continued this rhythm in the next over and scored 18 runs from the over by hitting a six each against Rabada.

Suryakumar's innings ended with Prabhasimran's amazing catch in the 17th over off Karen's ball. Harshal dismissed Hardik (10) after hitting a six from Tilak. Tim David, who came to the crease, opened his hand against Karen by hitting two fours and a six on consecutive balls. Harshal also showed Romario Shepherd the way to the pavilion after ending David's innings of 14 runs in seven balls in the last over. Mohammad Nabi was run out on the last ball without opening the account.
