Indian crew of the ship trapped after the Baltimore bridge accident, when will they be able to come back?


New York, The 20 Indian and one Sri Lankan crew members of the ship which collided with a bridge in Baltimore, US last week, are 'engaged in performing normal duties on board the ship' and will remain on board till the investigation into the accident is completed. A spokesperson for Grace Ocean Pte and Synergy Marine said, 'It has been confirmed that there are 21 crew members on board the vessel. The crew members are performing their normal duties on board the vessel and assisting the National Transportation Safety Board and Coast Guard in their investigation.

The 2.6 kilometer long 'Francis Scott Key Bridge' built over the Patapsco River in Baltimore collapsed when a 984-foot-long cargo ship bound for Sri Lanka collided with a pillar of the bridge on March 26. When asked how long the crew would have to remain on board, the spokesperson said, “At this time we do not know how long the investigation process will take and the crew will remain on board until that process is completed.”

Ministry of External Affairs in touch with Indian crew
The Singapore-flagged branch is owned by Grace Ocean Pte Ltd and managed by Synergy Marine Group. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in Delhi had said that there are 20 Indians on board the cargo ship which collided with a bridge in Baltimore, USA a few days ago and the Indian Embassy is in touch with them and local authorities.

US officials began questioning the crew aboard the Dali ship last week. Synergy Group had said in a statement that the NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) collected documents, travel data recorder information and other evidence as part of the investigation on Wednesday.

All crew members safe
Grace Ocean and Synergy have confirmed the safety of all crew members and two pilots on board the vessel. They reported minor injuries to one crew member and said the injured crew member has been released from hospital.

Six members of the construction crew who were repairing potholes on the bridge at the time of the accident are believed to be dead. Divers have recovered the bodies of two people from a pickup truck submerged in the Patapsco River and the search for four others is underway.
