New Delhi : Indian Medical Association (IMA) chief Dr. RV Ashokan has publicly apologized for his remarks. The matter is related to the statement made by him during an interview regarding the comment made by the Supreme Court. He publicly apologized in this regard on Thursday. He said that he regrets his statement. He never had any intention to lower the dignity of the court. IMA was also a party in the case during the hearing of which the Supreme Court made this comment.

Publicly apologized for the statement

A statement issued by the doctors' organization said that IMA National President Dr. RV Ashokan has publicly apologized for his statement to the press regarding the Supreme Court's comment on making IMA a party in the case. Citing the order of April 23, Dr. Ashokan said in a statement that IMA is equally concerned about the issues of misconduct.

While hearing the misleading advertisement case involving Patanjali Ayurveda Limited, the Supreme Court had said that it believes that the IMA also needs to set its house in order. In an affidavit filed in the Supreme Court, Dr. Ashokan had also apologized unconditionally for his statement against the Supreme Court.

Dr Ashokan said that IMA has filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court against misleading advertisements and malicious campaigns being run by some individuals and organizations against modern medical professionals. In reference to some statements made by me during an interview, I have expressed regret before the Supreme Court. I have also submitted my affidavit in the court to apologize unconditionally. He said in his apology that I never had any intention to belittle the importance or dignity of the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court had remarked

The Supreme Court had said that there are many complaints about the alleged unethical acts of the association members which break the trust reposed in them by the patients. They are not only prescribing extremely expensive medicines but also recommending avoidable/unnecessary investigations. Dr Ashokan said that continuous updating and dissemination of ethical practices is one of the main activities of IMA. The statement said that recently IMA interacted with patient groups to address the concerns of patients and a joint declaration was issued in Bengaluru.
