New Delhi. The deadline to apply for the post of head coach of the Indian cricket team ended on Monday. Gautam Gambhir is being considered the strongest contender for this post. But neither Gambhir nor the BCCI has said anything about this. The board and Gautam Gambhir have maintained silence on this. The tenure of the current coach Rahul Dravid is ending after the T20 World Cup. The T20 World Cup is to be played in West Indies and America from June 1 to June 29.

Gambhir's claim to lead Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL title has become stronger. Both the parties have not said anything about this. It seems that BCCI does not have a very strong option. It is believed that no big foreign name has expressed a desire to become the coach. Board Secretary Jay Shah has also said that he is looking for a candidate who is well versed with the domestic structure of Indian cricket. BCCI was eyeing VVS Laxman but this stylish former cricketer from Hyderabad does not seem interested in the full-time post. Laxman is currently the head of NCA (National Cricket Academy).

The one whose annual contract was taken away for indiscipline became the biggest hero of IPL, celebrated in Messi's style

A source in the board said, 'The deadline is fine but the board may take some more time before taking a decision. At present, the team is busy preparing for the T20 World Cup. After this, senior players will be given rest on the Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe tour and a senior coach from the NCA can accompany the team. So what is the hurry?

KKR owner Shahrukh Khan has a very close relationship with Gambhir, so it will not be easy for him to leave the IPL team. The other aspect is that the opinion of the senior Indian players present in New York on the possibility of Gambhir becoming the coach cannot be ignored. (Input PTI)
