Citizenship is acquired by birth
If a person is born in India on or after 26 January 1950, but before 1 July 1987, he will be considered a citizen only if his parents were born there. If someone is born after December 3, 2004, he will be called a resident of India only if his parents are citizens of India.
Citizenship is granted on the basis of descent
If a person is born outside India on or after 26 January 1950 and immediately before 10 December 1992 and his spouse is a citizen of India at the time of his birth, he can be called a citizen of India.
