New Delhi: After Army Chief General Manoj Pandey, the Center on Monday extended the tenure of Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) chief Samir V. Kamat for one year. The order said that eminent scientist Kamat was appointed Secretary, Department of Defense Research and Development (DDR&D) and Chairman, DRDO on August 25, 2022. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the extension of Kamat's service as DDR&D Secretary and DRDO Chairman for one year from June 1, 2024 to May 31, 2025 or until further orders. According to the government order, this extension is valid for 1 year i.e. from June 1, 2024 to May 31, 2025 or until further orders.

What is the reason?

The government is going to implement the advice of the nine-member committee formed to further improve the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO). This committee was formed last year, it was headed by Dr. K Vijayraghavan, former Chief Scientific Advisor to the Government. In January 2024, this committee gave its recommendations to make DRDO faster and more effective. Now the government is forming another internal committee to work on the advice of Dr. Vijayraghavan's committee. This new committee is headed by Dr. Kamat. The government report said that many important military projects of DRDO had problems. These included problems like taking more time and money, stopping them midway and calling them successful despite not achieving the necessary targets. This report is of 2022.
