Story of Gaya Dham
The story of Gaya Dham is associated with a demon named Gayasur. He had pleased Lord Vishnu by performing penance. On completion of the penance, he asked the Lord for a boon that “May my body become more pure than the gods. Whoever sees or touches my body will become free from sins.” Lord Vishnu granted this boon to Gayasur. After this, the situation changed. People started committing sins fiercely and in return started visiting Gayasur. In this way, sins kept increasing here.

When Vishnuji asked for a holy place to perform Yagya
When the gods got upset with this, they approached Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu came to Gayasur and said, “I want the most sacred place on earth to perform the yagya. Gayasur said, “Lord, there is nothing more sacred than me. I will lie down on the earth, you perform the yagya”. When Gayasur lay down, his body spread up to 5 kos.
Gaya had received this boon
Vishnuji started the yagya and due to the effect of the yagya, Gayasur's body started trembling. Then Lord Vishnu placed a rock there. Which was named Pretshila Vedi.
