UGC Biennial Admission 2024: With all universities in India being allowed to conduct admissions twice a year, everyone is looking at its benefits and challenges. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has taken this decision while taking the country towards the global education system. Two cycles of admission in a year require many resources including infrastructure. In such a situation, every university administration will have to think deeply to implement it. Universities say that work on this will start soon.

College Admission: When will admissions take place twice a year?

UGC has allowed all institutes to admit students twice a year, but it is not mandatory. It depends on the infrastructure and resources of the institute whether they implement it or not.

UGC Chairman Professor Jagdish Kumar said that we do admission for one session in July-August. But now we have decided that from now on all universities and colleges can do admission in July-August and January-February. This will benefit the students a lot. We have seen in online mode of study that it is very beneficial.

Benefits of Biennial Admission

Delhi University (DU) Vice Chancellor Prof. Yogesh Singh says that many universities abroad, including America and Europe, have two seasons – Spring and Fall. But most admissions take place in September. UGC's idea is good, which will be implemented gradually. Students who have a gap year or who missed passing the exam will get a second chance after 6 months.

Prof Mahesh Verma, Vice Chancellor of Guru Govind Singh Indraprastha University, says that we would like to implement it. It is beneficial for both students and universities. This will lead to internationalization. The schedule of our institutions will match the schedule of foreign institutions. Enrollment will increase. Placement agencies will also come twice a year. When hospitals can remain open all night, universities can also remain open, studies can be done in two shifts. This will also increase revenue.

The Challenges of Getting Into University Twice

Delhi University VC said, there will be many challenges for the university, such as infrastructure, teachers, staff arrangements. If all the courses run, the classes will increase. Currently, in the four-year UG program, four batches run simultaneously, so eight batches will run in two cycles. We cannot implement this in all the courses of DU, but it can be started with some courses next year. A committee will be formed for this.

Guru Govind Singh IP University VC said, entrance is a question because conducting a national level entrance twice will be a big challenge. Can the second batch be admitted on the same entrance or not? Will the seats be increased? How many teachers will be needed? A decision has to be taken keeping in mind the resources and funds. We will present the UGC decision in our academic council next week and consider it.

How will this model work amid fund cuts?

Many teachers' organizations say that universities already lack labs, classrooms, funds and teachers. In such a situation, if this decision is implemented, it will only affect the quality of education. Aam Aadmi Party Teachers' Union says that this decision will only increase the gross enrollment ratio. Also, double admission is not a global trend. Democratic Teachers Front says that amid fund cuts and shortage of teachers, the institutions neither have the infrastructure nor enough manpower to run two sessions simultaneously.

Jamia Millia: Starting with the first PhD

Jamia Millia Islamia Vice Chancellor Mohammad Shakeel said, we will put this decision of UGC in the Academic Council and then in the Executive Council. After consideration in these, it can be started with PhD. The existing infrastructure is insufficient to implement it in UG and PG courses but it will be considered.
