In a recent development, Rizwan Javed, a club cricketer based in the UK, has been handed a severe ban from all cricket for a period of 17 ½ years. This decision comes after the International Cricket Council (ICC), acting on behalf of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) as the designated Anti-Corruption Official, charged eight players and officials in September of the previous year.

Among the accused was Bangladesh international cricketer Nasir Hossain, who is presently serving a two-year ban. Rizwan Javed, however, faced the spotlight for his involvement in five breaches of the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) Anti-Corruption Code for Participants, specifically related to the 2021 Abu Dhabi T10 Cricket League.

Javed failed to respond to the charges, resulting in his automatic guilt for the offenses and a waiver of his right to a hearing. The charges against him include:

  1. Article 2.1.1 – Being involved in attempts to fix, contrive, or improperly influence matches or aspects of matches in the Abu Dhabi T10 2021 on three separate occasions.
  2. Article 2.1.3 – Offering a reward to another participant in exchange for engaging in corrupt conduct.
  3. Article 2.1.4 – Directly or indirectly soliciting, inducing, enticing, instructing, persuading, encouraging, or intentionally facilitating any participant to breach Code Article 2.1 on three separate occasions.
  4. Article 2.4.4 – Failing to disclose to the DACO (Designated Anti-Corruption Official) full details of any approaches or invitations received to engage in corrupt conduct under the Code.
  5. Article 2.4.6 – Failing or refusing, without compelling justification, to cooperate with any investigation carried out by the DACO in relation to possible corrupt conduct under the Code.

The imposed sanction retroactively dates Rizwan Javed’s ban to 19 September 2023, when he was provisionally suspended for the aforementioned offenses.

Commenting on the decision, ICC General Manager Integrity, Alex Marshall, stated, “Rizwan Javed has received a lengthy ban from cricket for his repeated and serious attempts to corrupt professional cricketers. The sanction imposed should send a strong message to other corrupters trying to target cricket at any level and demonstrates that any attempt to corrupt cricket will be strongly dealt with.”
