The ongoing unrest in Sandeshkhali, West Bengal, has prompted a response from Trinamool Congress MP and actor Nusrat Jahan. Facing criticism for her alleged absence and silence on the matter, Nusrat Jahan, on Sunday, clarified her stance.

Expressing her dismay at the accusations, Jahan took to social media, stating, “It is heart-wrenching waking up to such allegations.” She shared a newspaper report quoting Sandeshkhali residents and defended her commitment as a woman and public representative, affirming her adherence to party guidelines. Jahan emphasized that the Chief Minister has already dispatched assistance, and necessary measures are in progress for the welfare of the affected people.

The criticism arose from villagers expressing disappointment with Nusrat Jahan for not visiting Sandeshkhali, which falls under her Lok Sabha constituency, in the last five years. One resident mentioned, “There is no cinema hall in Sandeshkhali, but still, we travel 40 km to see Nusrat’s movies. But she did not come once to visit us at a time like this.”

The Sandeshkhali region has been grappling with allegations of land grabbing and sexual abuse, with TMC strongman Sheikh Shahjahan at the center of the controversy. Women have taken to the streets, demanding the arrest of Shahjahan and his associates.

In her response, Nusrat Jahan affirmed her genuine service to the people in her constituency, urging adherence to the law and support for the administration. She emphasized the need to refrain from targeting each other, advocating unity for the greater goal of peace and welfare. Acknowledging the top priority of people’s security, she urged against politicizing the issue.

Amid fresh protests reported in Sandeshkhali on Saturday, state ministers Partha Bhowmick and Sujit Bose visited the troubled areas to address villagers’ grievances. The government has received over 500 complaints related to land grabbing, and 18 individuals, including local TMC leaders, have been arrested in connection with various charges.

The situation in Sandeshkhali remains tense, with ongoing efforts to address the concerns of the affected villagers.
