CJI Chandrachud said, “Don't say 'yes, yes, yes' like this. Say yes.” This is not a coffee shop, this is a court. I don't like people saying 'or, or' at all.

The Supreme Court was hearing a petition filed in 2018 demanding an in-house investigation against former CJI Ranjan Gogoi. During the hearing, CJI Chandrachud asked, 'But is this a petition under Article 32? How can you file a PIL by naming a judge as a respondent?

On this the petitioner told the CJI, 'Yes-yes…the then CJI Ranjan Gogoi…I have been asked to file a curative petition…'

On this, CJI Chandrachud interrupted the petitioner and said that he should not say 'yes' in the court. He said, 'This is not a coffee shop! What is this yes, yes? I'm allergic to it. Yes, yes. This cannot be allowed.

This is not the first time that the CJI has objected to someone's tone in the court and reminded them of the decorum of the courtroom.

Earlier in March, during the hearing of NEET-UG, there was an argument between senior lawyer Mathews Nedumpara and Narendra Hooda. Nedumpara was continuously interrupting Hooda. Although the CJI had asked Nedumpara to wait, he did not agree. He insisted on speaking, describing himself as the most senior lawyer and amicus.

On this, CJI Chandrachud said, 'I have not appointed anyone as amicus.' Nedumpara started addressing the people present in the court room. The CJI stopped him from doing so. Nedumpara said, 'If you don't respect me I will walk out.' After this the CJI ordered the security personnel to take Nedumpara out of the court room.

The CJI said, 'Mr Nedumpara, I am warning you. You will not address the gallery. I am watching the court proceedings here. Please call the security personnel and take him out of the courtroom.
