Cordyceps virus could end the world
The virus of this fungus is called Cordyceps. People infected by it turn into zombie-like monsters. Its bite or its small spores infect humans and turn them into monsters.
He has also claimed this in his book
Professor Casadevall, 67, who works at the prestigious Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, US, has said that this fungal virus is a “real threat” to mankind. He published many of his findings in a book to be published in May 2024, called 'What If Fungi Win?', and it highlights the possibility of a pandemic caused by fungi.
Danger can strike at any time
In an interview with The Guardian, he said that although no fungus has yet been identified that can turn people into zombies, Professor Casadevall said, “I'm sure there will be more deadly fungus-borne infections in the future. We've seen it happen before.”
Fungi have the potential to spread new diseases
He said, 'There is strong evidence that some fungi have the potential to cause new diseases that have never been seen before and which can affect many people.'
Climate change will make the situation worse
The professor pointed to the possibility of fungi spreading “new diseases” to humans due to climate change. For this to happen, fungi or fungal organisms simply need to adapt to warmer temperatures. He highlighted that most fungi cannot survive at the body's internal temperature of 37 degrees Celsius, but some fungi are adapting to overcome this.
What is Cordyceps fungus?
Cordyceps fungi are a genus of fungi that includes more than 400 species. These fungi are known for their unique life cycle, which involves parasitizing insects and other arthropods. The best-known species are Cordyceps sinensis and Cordyceps militaris.
