New Delhi. The performance of the Sri Lankan cricket team in the T20 World Cup 2024 was very poor. The team led by Wanindu Hasaranga lost its matches to Bangladesh and South Africa in the group stage, while the match against Nepal was washed out due to rain. After the team returned to Sri Lanka, there is turmoil in the cricket board. After the veteran Mahela Jayawardene, now the head coach has also resigned. Former Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene was made the batting consultant coach of the team. Within 12 hours of Jayawardene's resignation, Silverwood has also left the post of head coach.
While leaving the post of head coach, Chris Silverwood said, 'Being an international coach means being away from loved ones for a long time. After consulting with my family, I am taking the decision with a heavy heart to return home and spend time with my family. It has been a matter of pride for me to be a part of Sri Lankan cricket. I am leaving with very good memories.'

During his tenure, he led Sri Lanka to the T20 Asia Cup title, while the following year his team reached the final of the Asia Cup in the 50-over format. In the T20 World Cup held in the US and the Windies, the Sri Lankan team could not even reach the Super 8. This was Sri Lanka's worst performance in an ICC tournament.
