The Central Hall was originally used as a library for members of the legislature. During the tenure of the 14th Lok Sabha (2004–2009), the then Speaker Somnath Chatterjee organised lectures by academics and scholars like American economist Jeffrey Sachs and Nobel laureate Amartya Sen in the Central Hall.
During Parliament sessions, members of both Houses used to assemble there to have tea and coffee to discuss issues of the day.
