Dangerous chemical coating on apples
A person named Arvind Chotiya has shared a video on X and wrote that 'Very red apples are being prepared, eat an apple every day, go to the doctor.' It is clearly visible in the video that someone is applying artificial color on the apples. We cannot confirm how much truth is there in this video, but it is certain that chemical polish is applied on apples in this way to make them shine more and look red.
This type of apple can spoil your health
To make the fruits shiny, a layer of chemical colours and wax is applied on them. Surprisingly, it can be difficult to differentiate between real and fake fruits. But such fruits can be harmful for health. A layer of wax is applied on apples to make them look more shiny and red. Three types of coating are applied on apples: beeswax, carnauba wax and shellac wax.
Disadvantages of eating apples coated with wax and artificial colours
The chemical used in wax coating is morphine which can cause liver or kidney failure. Apart from this, it can also cause nausea, vomiting and stomach pain. You can remove wax coating from fruits and vegetables yourself. For this, you can wash them with lukewarm water and a soft brush. Many times, pesticides are used on fruits before waxing them. If the waxing process is not done properly, pesticide residues may remain on the fruits which can be harmful if eaten. Eating too much wax can cause upset stomach, diarrhea or nausea.
How to identify chemical colour and wax in apple
Apples picked from the tree can vary in color. For example, some red apples may have a slight yellowish tinge or streaks. Artificially colored apples often look completely the same or very bright. An easy way to tell if your apples have wax is to place them in a bowl or sink and pour boiling hot water over them. If you start to see a white, waxy layer on the peel, you have wax on your hands.
This is how you can check if an apple has been waxed
Apples picked from the tree may look less shiny and a little dull, but waxed apples may look shinier or sticky to the touch. Wash apples after you bring them from the market to see if they have become discolored. Natural colors will not fade.
Try scrubbing or peeling
Rub the apple lightly with a dry cloth. If it is artificial wax, a little residue may remain on the cloth. Natural wax does not leave anything like this. Peel a little and see what color is inside. Artificial color may penetrate to the bottom of the peel.
