The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) has cracked down on eighteen Over-the-Top (OTT) platforms for disseminating obscene and vulgar content, following repeated warnings. Additionally, nineteen websites, ten applications (seven on Google Play Store and three on Apple App Store), and fifty-seven social media handles associated with these platforms have been blocked nationwide.

Union Minister Anurag Thakur announced the ban, highlighting the necessity to curb the proliferation of objectionable content. He emphasized that these actions were taken after multiple cautionary measures.


Extent of Influence

The I&B Ministry revealed that the social media accounts affiliated with these banned OTT platforms collectively had a following exceeding 3.2 million users. Despite their significant outreach, their content was found to violate several laws, including the IT Act, Indian Penal Code, and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act.


Ministry’s Observations

According to the ministry, the prohibited platforms extensively used social media channels to promote their content through trailers, specific scenes, and external links. Such promotional tactics aimed at luring audiences to their respective platforms.

Statement from the Ministry

In an official statement, the ministry expressed concern over the explicit nature of the content hosted on these platforms. It described the content as obscene, vulgar, and often portraying women in a demeaning manner. Instances of nudity, sexual acts, and inappropriate contexts were cited, including depictions of relationships between teachers and students, as well as incestuous family dynamics.


The decisive action taken by the I&B Ministry underscores the government’s commitment to upholding moral standards and safeguarding societal values in the realm of digital content dissemination.
