New Delhi: The bodies of 46 Indian workers who died in a massive fire in an apartment in Kuwait have been brought back to India. Most of the bodies were from Kerala, which were brought back home on Friday. However, a controversy had arisen over the Centre's refusal to grant political clearance to Kerala Health Minister Veena George to visit Kuwait. Kerala Health Minister Veena George had said on Thursday night, “We had sought permission from the central government to go to Kuwait and stand with our people affected by the tragedy and coordinate activities there, which was not given.” The state government had decided to send George to Kuwait to help in relief operations, including treating the injured and bringing back the bodies of the deceased. George reportedly waited for hours at the airport in the hope of getting permission from the Ministry of External Affairs. This is not the first case. Let us know which other leaders have accused the Modi government of preventing them from going abroad before this.

Mamata Banerjee also did not get approval for some foreign trips

TMC supremo and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has also been a victim of the Centre denying permission for her several foreign trips. In December 2021, she was not allowed to attend a three-day convention of the Nepali Congress in Kathmandu. In October the same year, Mamata was invited to the Peoples as Brothers, Future Earth event in Rome but the Centre denied her permission. In 2018, the Centre refused to clear Mamata's US visit to attend an event marking 125 years of Swami Vivekananda's historic speech in Chicago.

Kejriwal in trouble with Foreign Ministry

AAP supremo and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal has also tangled with the Ministry of External Affairs over the issue. In October 2019, the Centre said it had advised Kejriwal not to attend the climate summit in Denmark as his visit as a speaker was not commensurate with the level of participation of other countries. Kejriwal was unable to attend the World Cities Summit in Singapore after the Centre delayed the necessary political clearances after the July 2022 deadline.

In September last year, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) minister Gopal Rai had filed a petition in the Delhi High Court against the note issued by the Ministry of External Affairs rejecting his request to attend an event at the Columbia India Energy Dialogue in New York. Gopal Rai had applied online for political clearance with the Ministry of External Affairs after receiving an invitation to the event. The ministry rejected his application a week later, saying that the Delhi government's visit would not be appropriate as India is being represented at the event by Niti Aayog officials. However, he was later given clearance.

RJD MP Manoj Jha is also included in the list

In 2022, Punjab minister Aman Arora had alleged that the Center did not allow him to visit Europe. He alleged that he did not get approval because of the BJP. After this, the Center refused to approve the proposed visit of RJD MP Manoj Jha to Pakistan to address an event organized in memory of human rights activist Asma Jahangir. After this, Manoj Jha had called the rejection of his application unfortunate and said that this visit would give him an opportunity to highlight the great tradition of Indian political parties in fighting for the democratic rights of the people.
