Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday said no one should “retire” from politics as anyone who wants to serve the country has to do so for life and awaken the nation. He made these remarks at the launch of a book “The Five Decades in Politics” based on the political life of former home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde. The book is authored by senior journalist Rashid Kidwai.
'No one should retire from politics'
Referring to Shinde's age and long political career, Kharge said, “One should not retire in politics. One who believes in his ideology, who wants to serve the country, has to awaken the country throughout his life.” He stressed that thoughts, conduct and propaganda are all important in public life.

'Ideology, conduct and propaganda are essential for a party'
He said, 'For any party, its ideas, conduct and publicity are important, only then it can move forward. If your ideas are good, but they are not put into practice, then there is no use. Therefore, those who have come forward by working hard should get publicity.' Taking a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Kharge said that he does less work and more publicity. He also said that if everyone did not get the right to vote at the time of independence, then the upliftment of the poor and the deprived would not have been possible.
'It is everyone's responsibility to save the constitution'
The Congress president said, “This is the gift of Baba Saheb Ambedkar and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. The Constitution changed the lives of people by giving universal adult franchise. So it is the responsibility of all of us to protect it.” He said, “Sushil Kumar Shinde traveled from khaki to khadi with his simple nature, hard work and cheerful behavior.”
Mention of the Vice Presidential election
Later, in a post on 'X', Kharge said, “An important chapter in the book written on Shinde is the Vice Presidential election. Congress President Sonia Gandhi had made Shinde ji the Vice Presidential candidate against Bhairon Singh Shekhawat. Shinde's name was proposed by Sharad Pawar, who himself was a close friend of Bhairon Singh Shekhawat.” He said that in the Vice Presidential election, Shekhawat ji got 454 votes, while Shinde ji got 305 votes. Shinde ji has got the highest number of votes as an opposition candidate in the Vice Presidential election held so far.
