Maharashtra is set to expand its metro network to provide improved connectivity between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) and key areas, facilitating smoother travel for passengers catching flights. The expansion includes the underground Metro Line 3 (Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ) and Line 7A, running from Gundavali Metro station to CSMIA airport.
Current Status of Metro Line 3
The underground Metro Line 3 is in development, and passengers traveling from Colaba to the airport, specifically to CSMIA T2 station, will experience enhanced facilities and reduced travel time. This station is part of Phase 1 of Metro Line 3, running from Aarey to BKC, and is nearly complete, with 91% of construction finished. Phase 1 of Metro Line 3 is expected to become operational by the end of December this year or early next year.
Development Responsibility
The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRC) is responsible for developing underground Metro Line 3. It is anticipated that Metro Line 3 will become the busiest single line in Mumbai, connecting vital airport stations that link T1 and T2 terminals.
Operational Timeline for Metro Line 7A
Metro Line 7A, an extension of the existing red line (Metro 7) connecting Dahisar East to Gundavali, is scheduled to become operational by December 2025. The project, with an estimated cost of Rs 812 crore, aims to provide direct connectivity between Andheri East and the airport. Tunneling work for the 3.4-kilometer Line 7A has recently commenced. Part of the metro line will be elevated, running alongside the Sahar elevated road and the Western Express Highway.
Development Authority
Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is overseeing the development of Metro Line 7A. This upcoming metro line will serve as a crucial link, connecting western and eastern suburbs of Mumbai, South Mumbai, Mira Bhayander, Thane, and other areas through an extensive metro network, including lines 7, 2A, 2B, 9, as well as underground lines 3, 4, and 10.
Direct Airport Terminal Connectivity
Unlike the existing airport station on Metro Line One, both Metro Line 3 and Line 7A will provide direct connections to the airport terminal. Moreover, interchanging stations within the metro network, including Metro Line 1, Line 6, 2A, and 2B, will offer passengers better travel options within the city and its suburbs, enhancing overall connectivity.
