Movie Review: Anjini Dhawan's 'Binny and Family' is an emotional film that brings two generations closer.

Story of 'Binny and Family'

The film is about the independent-minded and rebellious Bindiya Singh aka Binny (Anjini Dhawan), who lives with her parents (Charu Shankar-Rajesh Kumar) in London. Her life changes every year when her conservative grandparents (Pankaj Kapur-Himani Shivpuri) come from Bihar to stay with them for 2 months.

For Binny, these are those two months of the year when the scenario of both his home and life changes. The bar of the house becomes a shelf of books. The party pictures hanging on the walls disappear. Her mother and her little dresses went back into the closet. Their late night party gets stopped because according to Grandfather, if the women stay out for so long and something bad happens then how will they show their face. Grandma sews his ripped jeans with needle and thread. Overall, her entire lifestyle is worth it. So, she keeps counting the days until two months pass and the grandparents go back.

Later in the story, when soon after those two months have passed, Binny learns that the grandparents have returned due to a medical emergency, his anger reaches sky high. She is adamant in not bringing them back, but this insistence weighs so heavily on her that her entire thinking about her grandparents changes. There is such a turn in her life that the grandfather with whom she cannot sit even for a minute, becomes her best friend. She starts talking to him openly on every issue from shopping to love darshan. After all, how does this generation gap between Binny and his grandfather disappear? The film shows that if these two generations come out of the confines of 'what will they understand' and 'kuch nahi aata' and listen to each other, understand and try to change themselves accordingly, then this generation gap will not only disappear. Will be done. Rather, the combination of the experience of elders and the energy of children can add new colors to the lives of both.

The intentions of the film are clear, its soul is in the right place. The film becomes emotional at many places in the second half. But the script should have been a little tighter. Its length is its biggest drawback. Many scenes like Binny's party, drama rehearsal and Bihar seem repetitive. Due to all this it seems that when will this end?

If we talk about acting then Pankaj Kapoor, Rajesh Kumar, Charu Shankar, Himani Shivpuri are experienced actors. Everyone is perfect in their role. However, Himani's share of scenes has been less. But Anjini Dhawan is the discovery of the film. He has acted very maturely in his very first film. Even in scenes with heavy emotional monologues in front of a legend like Pankaj Kapoor, she does not fail. In such a situation, it would not be wrong to say that he is not another star kid but a promising young actor.

Talking about the technical aspect, the effect of the low budget of the film is visible on its production value. There is a lot of scope left in editing, if the film was 15-20 minutes shorter it would have been more effective. Still, this family film with good intentions of connecting two generations is worth a watch.
