Amethi: Rahul Gandhi to Contest Lok Sabha Elections 2024 from Amethi, Confirms UP Congress President Ajay Rai
In the midst of preparations for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in 2024, a significant announcement has emerged. Uttar Pradesh Congress President, Ajay Rai, has declared that Rahul Gandhi, the Congress MP, will be a candidate from Amethi. Rai confirmed Rahul Gandhi’s participation in the Amethi constituency for the forthcoming elections. Additionally, he mentioned that Priyanka Gandhi, at her discretion, will choose her own constituency for the elections, including the possibility of contesting from Varanasi. Rai expressed the unwavering support of the party workers for Priyanka Gandhi’s campaign. Meanwhile, Ajay Rai also directed criticism towards Union Minister Smriti Irani, questioning her absence despite previously discussing the availability of sugar at Rs 13 per kg.
Historically a stronghold for the Congress, Amethi faced a setback in the 2019 elections when Union Minister Smriti Irani secured victory against Rahul Gandhi. Despite this recent defeat, Amethi has long been associated with the Congress family, having been represented by stalwarts like Sanjay Gandhi, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, and Sonia Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi himself has won the Lok Sabha seat in Amethi for three consecutive terms.
Presently, Rahul Gandhi holds the position of an MP from the Wayanad constituency in Kerala. His victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections against CPI’s PP Sunir by a substantial margin further elevated his political stature. With the recent statement from UP Congress President Ajay Rai affirming Rahul Gandhi’s readiness to contest from Amethi once again, discussions about his political future have gained renewed momentum. Notably, Rahul Gandhi’s membership had been temporarily revoked in a defamation case linked to his use of the “Modi” surname; however, it has since been reinstated. The case led to a two-year prison sentence for Rahul Gandhi, and his MP status was temporarily invalidated as a result.
