The actress had earlier said in an interview that she expected him to be disappointed at not having children, but she was surprised that he easily accepted that he could not have children. When Shabana Azmi was asked by Simi Grewal in the year 2000 about the importance of marriage for a 'working self-reliant woman', she said that her case was different as she did not have children. She said, 'Not having children made the choice easier in a way, because I could give more of my time, because I think motherhood is a very demanding job.'

Shabana quickly accepted the fact that she could not become a mother
When asked if it was a 'huge disappointment', Shabana said, 'I was shocked by the fact that it wasn't like that. Initially, I wasn't sure I would be able to become a mother. I was surprised that I accepted it so easily. Even when I realised I couldn't have children, I didn't let myself feel sad. I packed my bags and moved on, thinking there were so many other things I was grateful for and could do.'
Why did Shabana not adopt a child?
When Shabana was asked if she had ever thought of adopting a child, she immediately said, “I never wanted to adopt a child. No.” When asked the reason, she said, “I am friendly with Javed's children, so the children's needs are fulfilled. They are at an age where I don't have to worry about changing their nappies.” Farhan and Zoya also did not oppose her and Javed's marriage because they were very young at that time.
