Studying the Sun from a Unique Vantage Point
India’s space agency, ISRO, is gearing up to launch its first solar mission, Aditya-L1 Solar Mission, on September 2. The mission comes on the heels of the successful Chandrayaan-3 lunar mission. Aditya-L1 is designed to study the Sun from a unique vantage point known as the L1 Lagrange point, located about 1.5 million kilometers away from Earth.
Understanding the Solar Corona
The spacecraft will provide remote observations of the Sun’s corona and in-situ observations of the solar wind. The Lagrange point, where gravitational forces create enhanced regions of attraction and repulsion, allows the spacecraft to remain in position with reduced fuel consumption. Aditya-L1 aims to answer questions about the corona’s high temperature compared to the Sun’s surface and other solar phenomena.
Payloads and Collaborations
Aditya-L1 will carry seven payloads to observe different layers of the Sun, including the photosphere, chromosphere, and corona. The mission involves collaboration with national institutions, showcasing India’s indigenous capabilities. The Visible Emission Line Coronagraph (VELC) payload developed by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics will study the corona’s temperature, while the Solar Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (SUIT) payload from the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics will capture images of the Sun’s outer layers.
Unlocking Solar Mysteries
The satellite will orbit around the L1 point, allowing continuous observation of the Sun without disruptions from planets or eclipses. This special vantage point will provide real-time data on solar activities and space weather. Aditya-L1’s instruments will provide insights into the dynamics of the solar atmosphere, coronal mass ejections, and the solar wind. The mission’s objectives include understanding coronal heating, solar eruptions, and the magnetic field’s role in space weather.
