New Delhi. The Indian women's cricket team led by Harmanpreet Kaur has suffered defeat in the first T20. The visiting South Africa defeated the host team in the last over. Chasing the target of 190 runs set by South Africa, India scored 177 runs for 4 wickets. South Africa scored a big score with the help of half-centuries from Tajmin Brits (81 runs) and Marizanne Kapp (57 runs). Brits faced 56 balls in her innings and hit 10 fours and three sixes, while Kapp hit eight fours and a six in her 33-ball innings.

After being invited to bat, South Africa (IND w vs SA w) set a challenging score of 189 runs. In reply, the Indian team could only score 177 runs for four wickets despite a half-century from Jemima Rodrigues (53 not out). Openers Shefali Verma (18 runs) and Smriti Mandhana (46 runs) gave India a good start by sharing 56 runs for the first wicket. But Ayabonga Khaka gave the first blow by dismissing Shefali.

Mandhana was playing well but Chloe Tryon's ball took the edge of her bat and went into the wicketkeeper's hands and India lost their second wicket. Dayalan Hemalatha (14 runs) could not bat for long and fell prey to Nadine de Klerk after playing 17 balls. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur (35 runs) was dismissed by N Malaba on the last ball of the innings, ending the partnership of 90 runs in 59 balls for the fourth wicket between her and Rodrigues (30 balls, seven fours, one six) and the team lost by 12 runs.

India made its highest score against South Africa
Earlier, South Africa opener Brits and captain Laura Wolvaardt (33 runs) made a cautious start and shared a 50-run partnership in 43 balls to lead the team to a competitive score. The 189 runs scored in this innings is also their highest score against India in T20 Internationals.
