India will strengthen the nuclear triangle by launching the second nuclear submarine, concern over revelations on China in SIPRI report

New Delhi : India is set to strengthen its weakest part of the nuclear triangle by inducting its second SSBN (naval parlance for nuclear-powered submarines armed with nuclear-tipped ballistic missiles) INS Arighat in the next few months. The first INS Arihant was inducted in 2018. The launch of the S-4 in November 2022 was also significant from a strategic point of view. It was India's third indigenous nuclear ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) after INS Arihant and Arighat.

India's nuclear triad has been strengthened in recent years due to advances in delivery vehicles. More than a decade after Indian scientists began working on the Agni-V, the missile has matured through the testing process. On 15 December 2022, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted the ninth test of a nuclear-capable ballistic missile.

What is an atomic triplet?

The nuclear triad is a three-pronged military force structure. It includes ground-launched nuclear missiles, nuclear missile-armed submarines, and tactical aircraft equipped with nuclear bombs and missiles. Only four countries in the world have a nuclear triad. These include the United States, Russia, India, and China. Pakistan is partially a nuclear triad. Israel is suspected of having a nuclear triad, but its status has not been confirmed.

Following India's path, Pakistan is now in search of nuclear submarines, will deploy Babur-3 cruise missile

SIPRI report on China raises concerns

On the other hand, the report of Swedish think tank Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) on China has raised concerns. According to the report, China is increasing its stockpile of nuclear weapons at a faster rate than any other country in the world. China now has three times more nuclear weapons than India. Apart from this, it has also deployed “high operation alert” on some ballistic missiles. At the same time, Pakistan remains at par with India in terms of the number of nuclear weapons. At the same time, Russia and America are far ahead of other countries. These two countries have 90 percent of the total nuclear weapons.
