Bangalore. Sachin Tendulkar paid tribute to former India pacer and teammate David Johnson, describing him as a man who had a funny heart. The cricket god said he never gave up on the field. Johnson died on Thursday. 52-year-old Johnson, who played two Test matches for India in 1996, died after falling from the fourth-floor balcony of his apartment here. Local police have said that investigation is on to ascertain if it was a case of suicide.

Sachin Tendulkar wrote on Instagram, 'Deeply saddened by the demise of my former teammate David Johnson. He was a jovial person and never gave up on the field. My condolences to his friends and family.' Former India bowlers and Johnson's state teammates Venkatesh Prasad and Anil Kumble also paid tribute to him on social media. Prasad wrote, 'Shocked and saddened to hear the news of the demise of David Johnson. Heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. Om Shanti.'

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah also paid tribute to Johnson. He wrote, 'Deepest condolences to the family and friends of our former Indian fast bowler David Johnson. His contribution to the game will always be remembered.'

Former Indian batsman and coach VVS Laxman said, 'It is sad to hear the news of David Johnson's death. May God give strength to his family and friends to bear this loss. Om Shanti.' Virender Sehwag said, 'It is very sad to hear the news of David Johnson's death. Condolences to his family. Om Shanti.'
