He had commented on the committee formed on the new law, what did P Chidambaram say after Vice President Dhankhar's objection?

New Delhi: Congress leader P. Chidambaram has reacted after Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar objected to his remarks on new criminal laws. P. Chidambaram said that the task of drafting such important bills should have been entrusted to the Law Commission and not to any committee whose members work part-time.

Chidambaram said in a post on 'X' that the Union Home Ministry had constituted a committee for reform of criminal laws in May 2020, consisting of a chairman, convenor and members. Former Union Home Minister Chidambaram said that its composition kept changing from time to time and finally the committee had a convenor and five members. Chidambaram said that all except one member were serving professors of various universities and were working as part-time members of the committee. He said that this committee had submitted a draft of three new criminal laws.

Chidambaram said that after this the Parliament passed these laws. The Congress leader said, 'I believe that the task of drafting such important bills should have been entrusted to the Law Commission, not to a committee whose members work part-time and have other responsibilities.' A day earlier on Saturday, Dhankhar had targeted Chidambaram for his comment that these new laws have been prepared by part-time persons.

Addressing an event in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday, Dhankhar had said, “Are we part-timers in Parliament? This is an insult to the intelligence of Parliament, for which there is no apology, I have no words to condemn such thinking and calling an MP incompetent.” He said, “I appeal to Chidambaram from this platform to withdraw this objectionable, insulting and reprehensible comment about MPs. I hope he does so.”
