Store room converted into reading room, 3000 students in a narrow space
Vimal Tripathi (name changed), who teaches at a coaching institute in Mukherjee Nagar, Delhi, says that there are many areas like Rajendra Place, Karol Bagh, Mukherjee Nagar, Nehru Vihar and Gandhi Vihar, where coaching institutes are being run by flouting the rules. Many big coaching institutes are running in basements. Up to 3000 students study in them at a time. There is no one to stop them here. If there is a stampede over something, the path remains narrow. Many people can lose their lives.

Sometimes there is a short circuit and sometimes the stairs break
The buildings in which coaching institutes are running in Delhi's Mukherjee Nagar or Nehru Vihar have become so dilapidated that they can collapse anytime. When three people died in the library of a coaching institute, it became news, but here such incidents are heard every 10 days in the libraries of many coaching institutes. When a student gets burnt due to a short circuit. Or someone is taken to the hospital due to suffocation. Many times, due to the dilapidated condition of the building, even the stairs break and many people get injured because of that. But, these news do not come to the fore.
Basement Library: 40-40 students in a 50 yard library
Vivek Diwakar, associated with a coaching institute in Mukherjee Nagar, says that in Nehru Vihar or Mukherjee Nagar, flouting the rules, libraries are being run in the basements of buildings of just 50 yards. There is no one to monitor these libraries. 40-40 students keep reading books day and night in a 50-yard basement library.
Girls are not allowed in, but they sneak in at night
Vimal Tripathi says that as per the rules, most libraries operate only during the day. But, they also operate at night. In some libraries, girls are even allowed entry at night. Sanjeev, who came here as an IAS from Faizabad, has joined the 'modern library' i.e. 'reading room'. There are hundreds of such underground reading rooms here, where money is being earned by giving space to students in dangerous conditions.
A major accident can happen any time in the underground library cum reading room built in areas like Old Rajendra Nagar, Mukherjee Nagar, Nehru Vihar, Gandhi Vihar of Delhi, which has been ignored. Some standards have been made, but no coaching institute seems to follow them. Some small coaching institutes do follow the rules, but big coaching institutes openly flout the rules. The administration also does not take any action against them. Most of the buildings have become dilapidated. There is such a web of wires that a major accident can happen any time.
Vimal Tripathi, Coaching Teacher
Why do students go to study in the underground library?
Sapna and Aastha have come here from Faridabad, they have joined a coaching institute here. The rent of a small room of 10 x 10 is 12 thousand rupees. The room is so small that after placing two beds, a table and chair cannot be placed. In such a situation, the library is the only support for such students, where they can study peacefully by paying money.
Rent: 2000-3000 for 12 hours
Every year thousands of students from all over the country come to Delhi for preparation. The trend of studying in the library has increased among most of the students. This trend has spread from big cities to small cities and towns. After morning tea and breakfast, students bring their lunch to the library and then spend 10 to 12 hours there. Its rent varies according to the city. In areas like Mukherjee Nagar, Nehru Vihar or Rajendra Place of Delhi, their rent ranges from Rs 2000 to Rs 3000 per month. Hundreds of such libraries are running underground near Vardhman Plaza and Batra Cinema Building of Nehru Vihar. The arrangements there are very poor.
Concept of dark room in reading room also
Vimal Tripathi says that the underground libraries that are running look no less than a haunted place. Nowadays the dark room concept has also started. That means there will be light only on the student's desk. From a distance it looks as if a call center is being run. Facilities like books, newspapers, magazines, Wi-Fi etc. are provided in these libraries.
The library of greed is open 24 hours a day
Vivek Diwakar says that most libraries are open 24 hours, while some close at night. Here the space is booked on hourly basis. For example, if someone has booked his seat for 24 hours, then he will have to pay a fee of Rs 2000 to Rs 4000. In this, students can get the facility of Wi-Fi, water, toilet as well as locker at their seat. You can also take 3 month, 6 month or yearly membership, on which discount offers are also available. At many places, fee discount is also available on qualifying the prelims or mains. Apart from Delhi, the trend of libraries is also increasing rapidly in cities like Lucknow, Prayagraj, Banaras, Patna, Ranchi, Guwahati, Bhubaneswar in the country.
50% of coaching classes are run in the basement
Vivek Diwakar says that usually most coaching institutes have classes in the library itself because they have set up offices etc. on the top floor. Lokesh Tripathi says that there are about 100 libraries running in Mukherjee Nagar and Nehru Vihar alone. Most of these are underground. In Old Rajendra Nagar, 80 percent of the coaching institutes run in the library basement, where this accident happened.
What is the benefit of underground library math?
Vimal Tripathi says that if we talk about the whole of Delhi, it is estimated that more than 1200 such libraries are running. On an average, 200 students visit a library. If the average income of all 1200 libraries is added, it comes to about Rs 60 crore per month. It is obvious that in the greed for money, these coaching institutes compromise with the lives of students and gather huge crowds.
Emperor Harshvardhan had opened a library, a Chinese traveler had studied it
The trend of library in India started in the seventh century during the reign of Emperor Harshvardhan. At that time, Chinese Huen Tsang came to India, who studied in the libraries of Nalanda and Takshila universities. At that time, studies were also done in temples, where there were libraries. According to The Library: An Illustrated History, the formal beginning of library in India was from monasteries. The history of library is older than Mesopotamian civilization 5000 years ago. The people of Greece opened the public library for the first time. About 2100 years ago, Ptolemy, who came to India with Alexander's armies, opened a library in the city of Alexandria.

Students jumped out of the windows as soon as the fire broke out
Last year on June 14, 2023, a fire broke out in the coaching centre building in Mukherjee Nagar, after which many students jumped from the windows. More than 60 students were injured here due to a fire in the electric meter. It was then discovered that the room in which the class was going on was small according to the number of children. Similarly, in 2020, two roofs of the Bhajanpura coaching centre collapsed.
