A Glimpse into the History of Ghalib Ki Haveli

Although Mirza Ghalib was originally from Agra, he moved to Delhi at the age of 11. He married Umrao Begum in 1812 and began writing poetry under the name Ghalib in Delhi. Thus, Delhi is often considered his birthplace in terms of his poetic journey. Ghalib Ki Haveli was his residence during the 19th century, and he did not purchase it; it was a gift. Ghalib is believed to have spent his last years in this house.

Unique Features of the Mansion

Inside Ghalib’s mansion, you can explore not only his poetry but also artifacts and items related to his life. Upon entering the mansion, you’ll find a collection of Ghalib’s books displayed on a marble statue. Additionally, you can view utensils, accessories, and clothing used by Ghalib and his family in glass frames. The mansion’s corridor features paintings of Ghalib, often depicted enjoying a hookah.

Poetry Adorns the Mansion’s Walls

The walls of Ghalib’s mansion are adorned with poetry written in Urdu and Hindi. The premises also house portraits of other celebrated poets, including Ustad Jauk, Hakim Momin Khan Momin, and Abu Zafar. Every year on December 27th, in honor of Ghalib’s birthday, a Mushaira (poetry recital) is organized at this mansion. In 2018, a statue of Mirza Ghalib sculpted by the renowned artist Rampure was unveiled within the mansion.

A National Heritage Site

The Indian Archaeological Department has designated Ghalib’s Haveli as a national heritage site, preserving every aspect and story within its walls. You can uncover fascinating details about Ghalib’s life, including his hobbies and culinary preferences, during your visit.

Location of Mirza Ghalib’s Mansion

Ghalib Ki Haveli is located in the labyrinthine streets of Ballimaran, near Chandni Chowk in Delhi. It is situated on Kasim Jaan Street, close to a mosque. A visit to this mansion is a unique and enlightening experience. Please note that the mansion remains closed on Mondays and government holidays, but you can explore it from 11 am to 6 pm on other days. There is no entry fee for visiting Ghalib Ki Haveli.
