One of the main reasons for frequent vaginal infections after menopause is the estrogen hormone. Till the age of 40, the estrogen hormone protects women from many diseases. But when its level in the body starts decreasing, women have to face many physical and mental problems.
Dr Manasi Sharma, Obstetrician & Gynecologist, Motherhood Hospital, Pune, explains the causes and prevention of UTI after the age of 40.
What happens when estrogen levels are low?
Generally the age of 45 to 55 is called the peri-menopause period. During this time, the level of estrogen hormone in women's body starts decreasing, due to which the elasticity of the vagina starts decreasing and dryness increases.
Due to lack of estrogen, the healthy bacteria of the vagina, Lactobacillus, also starts decreasing. This increases the chances of vaginal infection.
Why do UTIs keep happening?
There can be many reasons for UTI. When the immunity reduces due to diabetes, anemia, low hemoglobin, the healthy bacteria of the vagina, Lactobacillus, starts decreasing. Prolonged illness, taking antibiotics for a long time also reduces the healthy bacteria of the vagina. In such a situation, the possibility of vaginal infection increases.
In conditions such as hysterectomy, ovarian removal, cancer treatment, women start experiencing a decrease in estrogen hormone even before the age of 40. Such women may get frequent vaginal infections because the protection of estrogen hormone is reduced.
Do only women get UTI?
What is a chronic UTI?
Frequent urination, pain while urinating, burning, itching, excessive amount of urine are all symptoms of UTI. When urinary tract infection occurs repeatedly, it is called recurrent or chronic UTI.
If UTI occurs more than three times in a year or more than twice in six months then it is considered recurrent or chronic UTI. Such women need to be more careful.
When are estrogen supplements given?
Women aged 65-70 years whose estrogen levels in the body decrease significantly and their periods have stopped for a long time, their vaginal area becomes very dry. Such women are given local estrogen supplements. This cures their UTI problem quickly.
Ways to avoid UTI
Keep the body hydrated. For this, drink 2 to 3 liters of water throughout the day. Taking liquid things is also beneficial. Holding urine for a long time also increases the possibility of infection. Take care of the cleanliness of the private part. Clean the private part after having sex. Avoid using public toilets. Increase the amount of curd, fruits, salad, green vegetables in the diet, these help in preventing infection.
