Delhi University changed the teacher recruitment rules, but teachers don't like it, know what is 'wrong' in it?

Delhi University Teacher Recruitment News: If you are a teacher/faculty in Delhi University, then the debate has started on the selection process. Actually, recently DU has changed its rules (SOP) for the recruitment of teachers. But DU faculty does not like these changes. They say that the new recruitment process is very slow and confusing. Teachers also fear that due to the new rules many people will not apply because now many new requirements will have to be fulfilled. Also, the fear of bias is also a big issue.

DU Teacher Eligibility: DU Teacher Eligibility

The minimum eligibility to become a teacher in Delhi University has been increased from 50 marks to 55 marks. SC/ST/PWD candidates will get relaxation of 5 marks. The final selection of candidates will be done in two stages-

  • Assessment through presentation
  • Interview with the Selection Committee

According to the DU notification, candidates will be evaluated on the basis of their presentation, writing and communication skills. The committee will also assess the candidate's “humility, passion and enthusiasm for teaching”.

The university has also changed the weightage given to various factors used in evaluating candidates. Parameters such as academic record, experience and research performance have been combined to give 20 marks out of 100, while subjective parameters have been given more weightage.

DU teacher recruitment policy new: Why the protests?

The protesting teachers have a problem with the rule of 'assessment through presentation'. They say that this rule will become a big hurdle for the candidates. This rule can also be misused and the selection committee can select its 'favourite' candidates.

Abha Dev Habib, secretary of DU's Democratic Teachers Front (DTF), told Education Times, “In the past, many qualified candidates were disqualified in the presentation round. Many less qualified candidates were hired. Due to which there were protests. After the implementation of these SOPs, UGC's minimum qualification for teacher recruitment i.e. post graduation and UGC NET qualification will be abolished. Also, as per the changed SOP, only 40 candidates will be shortlisted for each vacant post.”

Allegations on DU teacher selection committee too

Many teachers have alleged that the members of the selection committee have been appointed not from central universities but from several state universities.

At the same time, faculty members appointed as assistant professors in Daulat Ram College will have to complete a computer-aided teaching course in the next six months to confirm their appointment. Rajesh Jha, former member of the DU Executive Council, says, “DU has never specified any such criteria for getting a confirmation letter for the post of assistant professor. Generally, if the university does not raise any objection to the work of a teacher during probation, the status of that teacher is automatically confirmed after 11 months of recruitment.”
